Bear Attack In Montana Campground, 1 Killed, 2 Injured

A Soda Butte Campground bear attack has left one camper dead, two injured. The Soda Butte Campground bear attacks were early Wednesday morning in the popular destination. Reports say Soda Butte, Chief Joseph and Colter will remain close until at least Wednesday evening. At 4:30 AM local time Wednesday, park officials found a man dead and a male and female couple bitten. The couple is expected to survive. Campers tell KULR TV Channel 8 that Park Rangers were telling Soda Butte campers Wednesday morning about the attack. The news channel reports gates to Soda Butte Campground were closed Wednesday with officials letting “campers in one at a time to gather their supplies Wednesday afternoon.”

The campground, which is run by the U.S. Forest Service, was one of three closed Wednesday while the attacking bear or bears remained at large. Forest Service officials said they would consider closing more campgrounds after consulting with state wildlife officials leading the investigation.
